I was walking in the Detroit International Airport when a police man zipped past me, floating. He was riding a Segway! Wow, a real Segway being used for real-life purposes. I’ve seen a Segway before in Universal Studios, but it was more of a prop for Doc Marty, the scientist in Back to the Future.

I took a photo of the police officer using the Segway. He was using it so non-chalantly, not minding the on-lookers and rubber neckers like me. I tried to be as inconspicuous as I could, thus the tilted photo.

Barely two weeks later, I was back here in the Philippines in Greenhills. And I saw Philippine police officers making their rounds using Smart Bikes. The Smart bikes are three wheelers, they stand on their own, have small wheels but requires the rider to press on an accelerator hand-lever. (The Segway, on the other hand, just needs the user to lean forward, backward, sidewards to maneuver the gadget).

Well, it’s rather refreshing seeing our local police making the rounds in what you could call modern vehicles.
